In our previous email, we explored the benefits of acupuncture in managing osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, providing insight into how it can help relieve pain and improve overall well-being.

A common question I often receive, not only regarding arthritis but also acupuncture in general, is: “How many treatments do I need?”

Typically, a course of acupuncture treatment involves weekly sessions for 6-8 weeks. Acupuncture’s effects are cumulative, meaning they build up over time. The aim is for you to experience gradual improvement after each session, enjoying a little more relief for an extended duration.

Upon completing the initial series of weekly treatments, we assess your progress and consider spacing out the sessions. For instance, we might try extending the interval between treatments to every two weeks and monitor how you feel.

After this adjustment period, most of my arthritis patients find that scheduling maintenance treatments about once a month helps to sustain the benefits they’ve achieved. This approach can be particularly beneficial if you notice that your arthritis pain tends to worsen with certain conditions, such as cold weather. By coming in more frequently before the onset of such triggers, you may prevent severe flare-ups when those conditions occur.

One essential aspect to note is that while acupuncture is often sought after significant pain has already set in, it is also remarkably effective in PREVENTING pain when you receive regular treatments. Each individual’s response varies, and the initial estimate of once per week for 6-8 weeks might differ based on factors like age, duration of arthritis, and the severity of the condition. Generally, the longer and more severe the arthritis, the more treatments may be needed to effectively manage the pain.

Ultimately, our goal is to reduce your pain as much as possible and help you return to the activities you cherish, whether it’s gardening, playing with your grandkids, or any other enjoyable pursuits.
